watertight

by Maria Francesca

I'll walk there, I told her
and she looked at me
for a moment
as if
I'd grown horns
because it was raining outside
and I had a perfectly good car
and she had a perfectly good car
and what kind of lunatic
goes out in the rain
when she doesn't have to?

but my mother told me once
that I wasn't made of sugar
and I wasn't the wicked witch of the west
and even cold water makes good things grow;

so I left her
dry
confused and dying of unknowing thirst
in her watertight house

grabbed my black coat
and a rainbow umbrella -
danced out into the gray world

and got my leaves wet.
