Shared Agony by Jeffrey ParrenIf you time it right
I'm sure you could
sit in traffic
with a bunch of the same
habit-driven people
every day.
You could wave
to that unknown buddy
with shared agony
as today brings
the same awful crap
that yesterday did
but of course
you put on the
"today is wonderful"
face as you
wave wave wave
and eventually
the same so-and-so's
would perhaps
get a new car
or drive
a real friend's car
for the day
and see your true passion
your deep resentment
on each morning
you enter that grind
as you honk
and maybe even add
a touch of spice
with a gesture.
They can't blame you.
You will never share words
but emotions you will
to the shared agony
of the dull life endured
that life you throw on
that good face
and endure until
it finally ends
getting to your destination. 02/17/2009 Posted on 02/17/2009 Copyright © 2025 Jeffrey Parren

Posted by Greg Williams on 02/17/09 at 11:39 AM Excellent poem. It's one of those daily events, especially if you walk the same streets downtown or in a particularly large office building, you see those ubiquitous yet still unknown faces and even I'd never taken much of a moment to think of what a typical, sort of depressing formality it can really be.

We rarely know our neighbors, let alone those stuck in traffic beside us, and those at work we pretend to know but rarely ever do. But then how many know themselves? |
