Couldn't Put My Finger On It

by Jeffrey Parren

He was heavy.
He was fat.

He wore
a light blue sweater.

He was gracious.

His eyes
made my skin crawl.

He was gay and
he was happy.

He seemed at ease
with everything.

His existence
made work difficult.

I couldn't understand
why

until the wife
of the elderly couple
he was with
said to her husband

"Maybe Father
would like to
pick a vegetable..."

He was a priest.
