Other Moons

by Nancy Ames

The moon is full tonight.
I can see its bright outline
through my curtains.

I really ought to go and look at it
because this is an event that only
happens once a month,after all.
But this time I just won't.

The moon is rising white and full
in a snow-bright winter night
above the bright lights of the city.
But this moon doesn't need me.
It doesn't need me to go to the window
and look at it.

So I will lie in bed
with my graying head on the pillow
and remember other moons...

Like the one when Jimmy and I
decided to take a walk on the island
on the night of the famous moon-landing.

All around us people were watching it
in living-rooms full of television moon-glow
and eerie celestial beeping sounds.

We were the only ones for miles around
who were actually
watching the moon rise above the lake.
It was absolutely huge.

Author's Note: This is about the first time I noticed that the vast majority of earthlings were paying more attention to the image than to the reality, and I did not anticipate it becoming such a trend.

Peculiarly synergistic - our two moon poems - yours is the yin - mine is the yang : ) and beautiful.
