Middle school

by Vikki Owens

We are children
in middle-school,
we are passing notes to each other.

Only I am writing very serious things,
adult things,
like 'I am disappearing, you are not even noticing'
I am writing
'help me, I cant find myself'
'will you help me?
circle one
yes or no'
fold up the paper,
pass it across the bedroom
to you
where you unfold it,
and stare blank-eyed
until
you make a mark with your pencil,
refold,
send it back.

I open it up, holding my breath
and you have circled
'or'
