You said you would never forget

by Vikki Owens

On our very first anniversary
of the day you promised
that you would always love and cherish me,
that you would care for me,
through sickness and health,
and all those other promises that meant so much
to both of us,
but especially me,
on our very first anniversary of that day,
you gave me a silver necklace
with a tiny elephant,
and you said you would never forget.

You would never forget our vows,
standing there, seeing me dressed in white,
so beautiful,
you would never forget what a treasure I was,
or how happy I made you, every day of your life.
You would never forget
that I am a fragile gift,
and that you would treat me gently, and with the utmost care,
that I was a rare flower, and you would treat me as such,
you would never forget
what I have done for you,
building you up into the man that you are,
being your foundation, and your reason for living.
You would never forget
that I love you beyond words, beyond the simple meaning
of 'I love you forever', and that you love me
in the same intangible, unutterable way...

You said you would never forget,
you gave me a necklace to wear to remind me.
As if I needed reminding.

Do you feel my heart breaking?
