poncho in the rain

by Jared Fladeland

when I sat in front of a wave
of screams and shouts
clapping and stomping
i watched a bird fly across the sky
and declare to the world
"we are free".

and no one else saw it.

and here i am attached to the ground
like a stake pounded deep into the earth
and i just long to stretch out my roots
and walk.

do you remember what your childhood was like?

Not the point when you had friends and
had to live the rituals that trained you for adulthood,

but the moments when time never existed,
it was never too cold to go out and play in the snow,
it was never too hot to run circles in the yard,
and the possibility of hurt, loss, and the scarring of your soul
was never an option.

that's what it is like
to be a bird flying over the chaos
and smirking to yourself:
"I am free."

That opening scene is just perfect.

Fantastic poem, I enjoyed it. At the same time however I can't help but reminisce those moments when time never existed.

I was very small before the scarring started but i would twirl in the yard and stare up at the sars until I fell in a dizzy heap on the ground, yes I remember free....loved this thank you for the moment of free. smh

Thank you for the moment to really have me feel my childhood. It took me by surprise as soon as I read your question ~ that I suddenly felt free and unbound from adult concerns. What a lift! I forgot that I was reading, you wrote this so well.
