The mad scientist by Vikki OwensI had just one line
floating around in my pressure-cooker brain.
'she was a girl with a copper heart'
I could see the gleam of it,
and a few gears of clockwork,
and the fancy bits of baroque carvings,
but I couldnt weld the images together
to form a cohesive concept.
I set up my lab for it,
word-smithing until late at night,
the acetylene burning,
the solder smoking,
in the corners of my eyes
I could see her standing, empty,
arms hanging in a non-human way,
the beating of her heart
like the sound of tin moving in and out,
but it breathed no life,
because I had no analogy,
no element to bond with...
chemicals percolated
through tubing and glasswork
searching for just the right combination
of words
to make my copper-heart girl go....
