We fell into the ocean and we saw stars

by Vikki Owens

We fell into the ocean
holding hands,
we fell from the sky
still holding hands,
crashed into the waves,
we were always holding hands.

I felt your heartbeat
through your finger tips,
we swam,
through the tidal pools
and into open water
we saw the sky
reflected in the endless miles
of perfect calm,
a blue mirror.

We did not know
how deep the ocean goes
or what lives there when you sleep
floating on your back.
In my dreams the deep-sea fish
with their blind eyes
made ravages of my soul,
made tangles of your heart,
their scales embedded in our skin.

We did not know
how wide the ocean is
and how tired you can become
of the swim,
salt seemed to fill our eyes
most days,
and most nights.

Somewhere between the buoys
you stopped reaching for me.

One night
we swished around in the sea
with our eyes open,
we'd stopped navigating,
only feeling our way
blindly through the waves.
I looked
and you looked
and saw the reflection of the sky
and the sky was full of stars,
and the water was full of stars
and you reached for my hand.

It's always nice to find that person amongst the infinite. Damn near makes you believe in miracles, as Joey Ramone once suggested. Great work.
