A World Tanka First!

by Terry Olynik

For reasons obscure
I desire to be the first
To write a tanka
Using the neglected words
Borscht and deep-vein thrombosis.

What a privilege to be the first to congratulate you on such a distinguished accomplishment.

I first saw mention of Tanka in a Phyllys Wheatley poem from 1711. It was in a small chap-book she had sent to my great, great, great, great, great, Uncle Bobbledder Jamie Jo Desiree Utley III, it said, "Next time I see y'all make sure I says Tanka."
