the ever-yielding forces of my nature

by Ava Blu

we walked along the pier,
watching the lights in the distance over the dark water
it was almost too dark to photograph the scenery, but we tried anyway

the band at one of the bars behind us was almost a whisper in the distance
as we discussed the stars above
I told them I didn’t mind the music so much as long as my voice didn’t become
as distant

it was simple motion in the water,
simply conversations about the things around us

the rainbow of lights upon the water shown on our skin
and I motioned for Amy to capture it with her camera

she said it was almost too cold to be there,
and they all agreed,
but I just stared into the night with the hood upon my head

I think we walked with the beat,
or at least I know I did
as I convinced LeeAnne to skip along with me

I’d had one more glass of wine than I had meant to,
the warmth of my flushed face felt nice

I was the fifth wheel
but they never called me on it

we were the only ones walking,
everyone else finding the comfort of alcohol inside

Amy and I confessed our desire to take violin lessons
while the boys wished to own one of the big boats docked

they talked about what they would name the boat
and the summers to be spent fishing

I wasn’t meant to be a part of those plans,
but they discussed it as if I would be

and I didn’t bother to correct them

I didn’t really want to leave,
my body dreading the ride home

but their bodies were often too cold
and in need of warmer weather.
