Anomaly by Scott Cadence
I.
They say
there are many anomalies
in the universe.
all different types
of stellar matter,
collapsing and exploding -
black holes,
worm holes,
sucking you in,
spiting you out,
even some
with a light beam
shooting straight out,
destroying everything
in it's path.
II.
She calls me
from his phone.
Undoubtedly for a favor,
or to talk about some cd
I never returned,
things that sound ridiculous
in a six year wake.
I let it go to voice mail,
she leaves none.
III.
Her friend,
who had an eye for me,
actually had me once,
called today
and I answered.
She told me
that back in Connecticut
shes happy.
Sends me a picture
of her new baby
and a man
who looks
just like me.
IV.
My best friends ex
shows up at my door,
swooning in the light,
texting someone and then
exploding into conversation.
Shes a hot mess
and all my friends lust after her.
shes always kissing on me
in dark corners.
I look at her
and I can only see
my best friend,
who should be here
instead .
V.
My mother
broke down in tears
over breakfast,
my grandmother blames
all the pills.
As if there was a choice,
with not a single joint
left to fuse.
Her poor frail body,
attacking itself from the inside
because it doesnt know
any better.
We try not
to count the days.
VI.
They say
there are many anomalies
in the universe.
The extinction
of light,
caused by dark nebulas -
clouds so dense
they obscure the light
from the background.
The formation
of which is very irregular,
with no clearly defined
boundary.
Taking on
convoluted serpentine
shapes.
Dust
In the coldest,
darkest parts
of space.
sounds
about right.

Posted by Gabriel Ricard on 01/19/09 at 04:27 AM I love how far this travels, the myriad of places it takes us. And your eye for imagery makes all the better. |

Posted by A. Reed on 09/20/11 at 04:14 PM Very interesting. I guess I should have kept up with your library. |
Posted by Jody Pratt on 12/28/11 at 11:16 PM I often use the word stellar to describe poetry I like. In this case it is so literal I think I'll just say, spectacular. I feel I could input several current happens of my life in to the center of this poem. Wonderful open and close. This is what poetry is about. |
