Little One

by Amanda J Cobb

Wide awake at 3am
and no surprise,
those two written words earlier
having sent a jolt of new life
straight to my heart, my core
that for the past few months
has kept itself strictly in check,
afraid that the slightest slip in control
would send it careening into
a panicked allegro
or the weak pulse of despair.
Two simple words, long absent,
their reappearance, to me,
the epitomal sign of continued affection,
born as they were
in the carefree time
when life and insecurity
hadn't yet intruded
and there was only
you and me
and two heartbeats
perfectly in sync.

Author's Note: I realized upon re-reading this after some of the feedback that this could be interpreted as being about a baby/pregnancy - totally was not my intention, apologies. I should clarify that 'little one' is a nickname that someone very special calls me.

You've said it so well. A "Little One" changes a couples life quite dramatically.

I think that one of the wonders of being a poet is realizing the freedom of the reader to interpret as suits them. Either way, this is a touching piece.
