why we spent a third of our life asleep

by Jared Fladeland

i.

every morning
is a baked goods and soda breakfast
before taking a brief fifteen minute nap
watching football highlights, and then dressing,
plunging into the cold that would freezerburn most raw steaks
and heading to work
to die a little more each day.

every afternoon is half dying,
half catching up with the wife and dog
on today's current events,
and steaming myself silly
in a shower just a few inches too narrow.

the evening is filled with food,
a pleasurable cuddle while
either gluing myself to a tv,
a book,
or a video game,
all of which requires
the least amount of human contact possible,
so that i can go to bed,

and dream of all the wonderful possibilities.

ii.

the type of dreams
where musicals are a thin slice away
from genius
and body parts are lost and rejuvenated.

the type of dreams
where heroes are created
with even the most simple, benign power,
but the anarchy we can create is the most fun of all.

the type of dreams
where laying parallel to the ground
grants you the power of flight,
and oh, the nosedives one can take when at the pilot wheel.

the type of dreams
where death can visit us
and we don't have to be afraid
because it's often to comfort us
when loved ones are missed too much
for any normal words to heal.

the type of dreams
where love
eats away all the bad stuff,
like a corrosive acid
cleaning out the kitchen sink,
so that all things flow through us.

the type of dreams
that you want to return to
the instant you wake up.

My favorite things about this poem are its savorable oddities,(description of breakfast, (very) early nap, unusual analogies (freezerburn the steak)and the very acceptable perspective that we'd rather be asleep for good reasons. That theme that dream takes a kind of reality presence in life, is wonderfully exposed here never gets its due in most views, I think and the unexpected and true ("corrosive") influence of love is fantastic.

I love my dreams Flared. This poem reminds me to keep a pad by my bed to write down some of the wonderful dreams I have. I use to do this and was wonderful grist for stories, poems and songs. This was so exciting to read! It also reminds me how wonderful it is to be retired, but staying busy with what I love to do.

I like that life is normal, ordinary, bearable, but the dreams are so extraordinary...me I just wish to sleep. smh
