Broken Beak

by Siri Lipscomb

       Broken Beak

Flying and feeding day after day

Gorging with nectar and need

Ruby throated hummingbird

Flapping at warp speed

Discovering the desired creature

Dipping his iridescent hues

Preening in the reflective pool

She called to her perfect mate

Only forty feeders away

His image held so graciously

By the stillness of the day

Swooping, gliding, diving, driving

Through the winds of change

Falling, floating, calling, thriving

Descending within range

What a surprise to realize

That all she could see was him

And all he could see was himself

Splat!  Another broken beak…..

Great last line. I'd love to see this as a spoken word sort of thing.
