Three in the morning: snow

by Vikki Owens

In those early years,
when you were working harder
than you ever had,
working longer,
work was awful.
You were so bored
but you chugged on just
like a trooper,
because you were doing it
for us...

And you came home late at night
and our hours were backwards,
we became like vampires,
but at least we had each other,
and so that morning,
it was so early morning,
and we were having a snowstorm,
and the snow was falling so pretty...

so we drove at three a.m. to your mothers house
because she had the best hills
and we took our mittens and our snow-sleds
and in the light of the lamp-post in your
mothers back yard
we went up and down them
like we were children,
and i stared up at the black sky
to watch the white flakes come down
soft on the bitter breezes...

and i will remembered that night
for the rest of my life
