topic: worn through shoes by Amanda L Marronsupplies have yet again been delayed
damn those terrorists
always ruining anything that might possibly be good
i wasn't supposed to end up in iraq, you know
i had great orders
i was heading to japan
cake orders, they said
a few days before i was supposed leave
things got all turned about
change in plans, they said
you're heading out to iraq
you're gonna combat those terrorists
you're gonna make your country proud
my mother started to cry
my father's smiling face faded to a grimace
i packed my bag like a good soldier
and shipped to where i was told
every day, i walk my patrol
cautious, yet eager
apprehensive but anticipating
my m-16 at the ready
the sun heated sand burns at my feet 12/23/2008 Author's Note: I wrote this after talking to the people who have been boots on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have been on an aircraft carrier near their shores but never there.

Posted by A. Paige White on 12/23/08 at 07:15 PM Thanks for this great reminder of what our armed services sacrifice for us. As trite as it may sound, I do appreciate it Amanda. Our nation is a newborn compared to most of the others and look at the rapid technological advances that make life a little easier... and a great deal of it came from Americans and the Americans that protect us made it possible. Just little things we take for granted... I'd have died in childbirth with my first child if it had occurred a few decades earlier. Thank you for serving us in this capacity. |

I've written a comment here four times now and deleted each one. Suffice to say you have captured what is believed to be the "man on the ground's" eye view. It may not be pretty, but then again, war isn't meant to be. |
