Russian Blue

by Lyss Copeland

As you wrap your arm around my waist,
I allow my eyes to gaze into and be captured
By your Russian blue, warm, laughing eyes;
I let you pull my body close to yours,
My heart choking from anticipation and
Fear.
Your lips smile with a natural shyness
That soothes my wounds and relieves my mind
That you’re with me because you need to be.
Yet, the fear is still here,
As your smile comes a little closer to my smile,
Your blue eyes a little closer to my hazel ones.
Can you see the fear in my eyes,
The slight quiver in my lips,
As I feel your arm tighten around my body
And I relish your hand caressing my cheek
And I wish for you to get even closer
Before my heart explodes from this growing fear
That you’ll pull away at the last second,
Deciding that I’m not good enough for a kiss?
I think you do, because your eyes grow sad,
Your hand falls back to your side and
You pause with your lips now serious in their look.
I can see the questions reflected from your mind and heart
Through your eyes, so blue, so beautiful.
And I surprise myself
As I wrap my arms around your neck,
Trace your cheek to reach your chin, your lips.
You allow my eyes to now capture yours
And you smile so wonderfully
As you let me pull your body into mine.
There’s only us here,
Only your eyes and mine can see all that is happening;
And your Russian blue eyes closing is the last thing I see
Before I feel your lips on mine.

vulnerability, shyness, that fear of maybe having read things wrongly, all encapsulated into a moment of exciting, terrifying possibility. beautiful.
