Killala by Peter Humphreysacross the bay
beneath the moon
the lights of Inishcrone
cast shallow images
upon the retreating tide
a sole oyster catcher
calls us away
along the quay
the boats are
hove to
for winter's rest
and the distant
blue light
by Ross Strand
alone makes safe
the perilous journey home
it was ever thus
this twin towered town
where Irish, French and
English fought
but failed to catch
the growing hope

Author's Note: In 1798, the Year of the French, a small French expeditionary force joined the United Irishmen in an effort to overthrow English rule. Victories both here and at the 'Castlebar Races' ended in defeat, however, in Longford on the banks of the Shannon.
