Turns Out

by Alison McKenzie

Turns out it’s a mix -
Pleasure and pain,
Amazing exchanges of all sorts,
New territory punctuated
By major blasts from the past.

Back in the day,
I tried to calculate my future,
Plotting the theories,
Multiplying by all the denominators,
Solving for “x” in the end.

I’m not adequately prepared.
I didn’t put enough aside for this rainy day,
And my intelligence is waning
In the brain-fade of age.

I'm going back to school,
Ironically Winter Term,
Just like the next leg of
My journey in Life,
I wonder how much of it
I’ll be able to retain?

Do you think it’ll ever be taught -
Life 101?
It ought to have
A pre-requisite course
Taught prior to birth,
Manual accessible 24/7.
I’ve had better hopes.

I wish you well Alison! I still don't know many high schools that teach 'parenting' let alone 'life'. I think sometimes young parents aren't even sure how that happened. But you'll do fine I'm sure.

I think you'll be just fine, personally. Wonderful read, start to finish.

...tawk 'bout brain-fade, and did you actually mention RETAIN? gal, we don't retain, we experience...and as has been said, you'll do wonderfully, B.F. Skinner, a great psychologist, said: 'a college education was what you had left after all you've learned has all been forgotten.' to me that's as close to a good descript as any i've heard...but to not lose the totality of the title, yeah so many thins just 'turn out', eh? good one.

Ali, you are one of the mosted gifted and eloquent writers here. It is hard to believe, at times that you don't have that piece of paper you crave. Education is now personal to you. When it is this personal, nothing will get in your way. You constantly impress with your sense of introspection. It is impossible for me to believe, that your future teachers won't see what we do. All you have to do is let them see it. People that think are never satisfied, they always want to know more. Welcome to the journey.
