Memories

by George Hoerner

moving from room to room
boxing things up
putting things away
trying to decide what
must be taken
and what can stay
behind for now

as if putting things
into storage
somehow allows them
to continue living
or at least presumes
the possibility of resurrection

the process returns
many memories
opening thoughts/feelings
not thought of forever
if yesterday is never

a cursed look into the past
at people known and lost
but found again in phone books
on the inet or
just a joggle of the mind
brought on
by a word, a book, a song
and tomorrow remains

and the things unsaved
are tossed on the pile
of non-recyclables
for how many memories
can one retain

and it is never
the painful things discarded
except for a few tortured mementos
that have been carried too long
and for which meaning is
too complicated to express

things which bring only feelings
to the surface without words
for expression

Wow. Yeah. Every word of this is poignant because of its truth. Some memories you want to hold onto longer so you keep those keepsakes for longer no matter what they are, even the smallest of things. You either can still appreciate their value or move on when you are ready. This is really great. ~JPP
