13. walking away or something like it

by Nanette Bellman

"...fuck, it's raining..."

i startle-slammed the door on accident.
i wasn't expecting you to be on the other side
but it didn't stop me from walking through you.

you mumbled something that i pretended not to hear
and i kept on trekking
until you actually spoke up
and stopped me dead in tracks.

i turned to you and let you have it.

"i'm going to say, what i need to say
and you're going to listen.
you're going to keep your mouth shut,
your ears open, and listen."

your surrendered and let me speak my peace.

you bantered back and realized
that i made my mind up.

you put your hand on the door knob
and turn back at me with a pleading look.

your eyes look glossy, water filled in the moonlight

i swear you were crying.
