Princess Pretense (a song)

by Eric Hinkle

To know you is to know a shadow,
changing shape everywhere you go.
Your looks are as deceiving as a chameleon's,
changing appearance with your different moods.
You speak a politician's truth,
only saying what you know
the people will want to hear.
Your life is an arsenal of stolen identities,
switching names and leaving
once you've expended all your friends.

You carry two quack sacks of synthetic ersatz;
a bogus pseudo-faux counterfeit sham.
It's as original as is your carbon-copy life
as an impostor.
You're a phony imitator.
Your put-on is a hoax.

EARLY 2005... :)

Author's Note: Old school. Back in the height of my Elvis Costello fixation - complete with over-crowded lines and fancy words. Bear with me... the good is mixed in with the bad. :)

I actually picked up the thirtieth anniversay edition of My Aim is True the other day. Well, I downloaded it, anyway. Great song, man. I definitely wouldn't mind hearing this for myself.
