The Smiling Moon

by Eric Hinkle

Shuffling feet in a
brisky breeze
lifeless chill wraps
like a frozen afghan
foggy breath and
brick-red ears
nerves screaming
and nose streaming
Steady snow sails soundly
to a steel-solid ground,
and on the cheeks of a
frostbitten face,
looking up at the glow
of a blue-white moon
smiling down sweetly upon
the hopeless one.
