09. I've Given Up Caffeine

by Arianna Woods

The last time we spoke
I didn't, wouldn't, couldn't
Make a sound.

The click of the receiver being set down
To hang up
May as well have been the click
Of the safety on a gun.
You shot.

I knew I'd want you back
As soon as World War III was over

The nuclear bombing that ended the world

And I did. I wanted you back.

Others do not compare.
You are crazy. I'm crazy
For missing you.

I watch you watch me
In class, in the hallways.
With green eyes that stand out

Sea green that strikes a nerve
A face, a glare
That could bring me to my knees.

I know it's useless to want you
But I do. So badly.
And I guess that it shows feeling

Or something like that
