Cows Blocking the Path

by Jeffrey Parren

I'd rarely say
I have qualities
that would make me
an alpha male
unless at my old jobs.

The restaurant
I work at now
I have grown to accept
my view
from the totem pole.

The only time I get close
is when the hordes of cattle
congregate by the bar
and the cougars are hunting
the new corporate credit toters

and all I want to do
is carry the five pounds
of freshly cooked meat
to the table
just a few steps behind the crowd.

Maybe it's the heat
or perhaps I realize
they aren't working
and don't respect
that I still am.

Either way, my low
grumblings to excuse my path
become strong growls
and I could care less
if someone catches a burn

because in my mind
they would learn a lesson
but the truth is
they would curse me out
while retreating back to the herd.
