Moments of Zen

by Jeffrey Parren

It's the moments of Zen
that catch me off guard.

I could be
tossing romaine leaves
with Caesar dressing.

Frothing milk
for cappuccinos.

Polishing glasses
as part of my side work.

Any repetitive motion
seems to catapult me
into the realm
of possibilities.

Sure the leaves
get covered 100%
and the milk
has foam worthy
of acclaim
and the glasses
are spotless
though its quite
consuming of time
because I lose
all track of it.

These moments
make anything possible
and I even discover
some of my poems
within the deep thoughts
while performing
monotonous rituals

but still I wonder
what could really come out
if I worked in a factory
or some place
that demanded I do
the same thing
over and over

and in thinking that
I realize
that serving the public
although varying by person
is just that
only I get to walk around
instead of stand
or sit
in the same place.
