Not So Bad After All

by Jeffrey Parren

I almost got hit
by a CitySights tour bus
walking the streets of NYC
while reading poetry
and thinking
this morning.

One of those guys
who sold the bus tickets
yelled at
but for me
"Hey! Buddy, BUDDY!"

I calmly stepped up
back onto the sidewalk
while saying an emotionless
"thank you."

About twenty feet down
I noticed a man
by a garbage can
then another
who almost walked into me
because he was staring
at the other man
and when I got closer
I noticed
what the stare was for:

The first man
was about to sift
through the trash
though in the process
was falling asleep
repeating the same
small motion
of being about
to reach in
but then
catching himself.

Almost getting hit
by a bus
just didn't
seem so bad
anymore.

Quite a story and write. Years ago living in South Jersey, I would at times drive up early on a Saturday morning to NYC. I'd park in the 80's and walk down 7th Ave and still see those who slept the night in a door way either just getting up or still in a dreamy wonder land. Most of us have no idea.

NYC... what a city! It is just so alive, the good and the bad. This is an excellent representation of it!
