05. do not resuscitate

by Nanette Bellman

from the moment we are born
we are allotted so many breaths.

i compose these epic speeches.
i contort words from my emotions
like pulling rabbits from a hat.

but my compositions just roll off my tongue
through your ears
and sweat down your back.

i tell you that i have no idea why
i continue to waste these precious inhales and exhales
on someone who i cease to exist too.

these are the last ones i'm wasting on you.

Author's Note: i'm done wasting my life on you.

I love the finality and irony in this. This is great. I love it.
