no orchard thrives here

by Dani Rose

i wonder, if you will
pull at me, as you did
the apple tree
in the back yard
of my youth.
i have no fruit
to bear, as you do;
no great dream that
motivates me to my
witless, awkward
end. i stand, stoic
and inconsequential, but
when you come to reap
the benefits of my
barren soil, when you come
to take, and take and
replenish nothing--
you know i
will give it all.

that ending is a gutwrencher. sometimes all we feel capable of is giving it all.
