I understand
that it's my job
to explain

every

single

thing

about the menu
with mouthwatering detail

but when one of my tables
happily announces
that they are all teachers
and the first question is posed

concerning an item
with an unusual name

and a simple
yet thorough
description
is not a quarter inch
underneath the title

my mind couldn't help
but wonder
if they practiced
their own lessons.

All I could hear
were my teachers of yesterday
ensuring we read

ALL

of the instructions
before asking a question

and in this moment
I pointed to the menu
to show the description
and read it back

verbatim

as to emphasize
what golden rule
was just violated

and I did hear
that moment's hesitation
with the "oh yeah" clarity

and in having this small victory
I was able to describe
everything they wanted
and proceed
with my chin held slightly higher.
