Imbalance

by Jeffrey Parren

When people
are waiting to be seated
or are in need of something
their sense of time
is multiplied
a minute
can seem like twenty
twenty minutes
can seem like an eternity.

When people
are having a great time
or the weather is bad
their sense of time
is divided
twenty minutes
can seem like a minute
an eternity
can seem like twenty minutes.

When waiters
are serving their guests
or helping others
their workload
is magnified
one important task
can seem like five small
five important tasks
can seem like an infinite small.

The imbalance of things
is that the served
can act subordinately
wreaking havoc
on the value of time and money
supremely diminishing
a job well done of those
whose biggest asset is patience.

Nice write Jeffry. The problem with time, as I've told my kids so often as they get bored easily, is not being involved in the minute. When you are thinking of what will come instead of what is here now you are living in anticipation. Our ability to anticipate without nearly immediate gratification is very limited in this society.

so, I've never had the privledge to dine where you work, and I doubt I ever will, but allow me to say, thank you. I don't think I could ever be a server. Great read though, relateable to others.
