Slip Me a Good One

by Trisha De Gracia

The window was left open half a crack before I left

which means, for me in my wee little suite

that tonight I would surely be freezing.

It's worth it, I thought, for the smells of the world

wet pavement and would-be snow, embryonic

and damp in a sky with no light and low ceilings.

I shut it, doffed my skirt and shirt and lobbed

this rental body down haphazard on the bed

slacked every muscle just to see how I would fall

if I were thrown, or dead (not that I'd like to be

just wondering...)

Fumbled under sheets to slither myself warmer

singing Holiday off-key and

idly pondering her deadbeat father.

Laid awake for hours naked

thought of you and thought perhaps I think of you too much

whilst naked

Figured I knew better than to stop too much to think it

Counted sheep until my sleep consumed the thought.

Woke up and felt too crowded and too hot.

Very nice. We are all inside aren't we. It's all there inside us waiting to come out.

I love the turn this poem takes from the beginning, the images of cold and snow, the words and how well they fit together. Really outstanding.

I know what it's like to wake up in the midst of a flock of dead sheep. Obviously, that's a blatant fiction - it's just the way I lie. Truth is never naked, but I think you've undressed it more than adequately here...the 'rental body' takes it to a hire level, and when you drop it, the whole thing falls into a sumptuous place. So well crafted, I could float on this :>
