Otherness

by Dan Kasten

When I look in the mirror these days
I see more than just my own reflection

from my home amongst the strategically isolated
I see an otherness grafted from the stories of friends and strangers

colored by history, folded into still-life portraits
sewn together for my benefit with carefully crafted silk

to be posed as truths crusaded by those
who would weave perception for profit.

Author's Note: The first of three poems portraying the presidential campaigns currently happening in Ohio.

“Pay for your freedom, find another gate
Guilt by associate, the rushes wilted a long time ago
Guilty as you go” – REM “Green Grow The Rushes”
