branches

by Barry Franklin

When you're gone,
I have to replace you with
     something.
I can't be without you.
So, the nearest tree becomes
     who you were
and I laugh at the leaves.

If you ever come around
when the trees talk to me,
please don't think I'm strange,

I'm just missing you
and the branches of your love.
