Watching The Swans Circle The Pond

by Richard Davis

Watching the swans circle the pond I think
of Yeats standing by the water at Coole.
He stood there alone as twilight deepened
to darkness, admiring the beauty and passion
of the creatures he loved so much.

When they rose and flew away
his heart went with them.

How long did he remain in reverie?
Was it the chill of the autumn night
that finally turned his steps toward home, or did
a full moon suddenly float upon the water
causing him to pause once more, until
he heard the voice of Lady Gregory call out?
