The Enchanted Season Is Upon Us

by Richard Davis

A perfect fall day:
autumn foliage bright
as a bonfire blaze

busy squirrels skitter
across stonewalls
cheeks puffed with acorns

kids tumble and laugh
in piles of fallen leaves

bats swoop low over
the lawn at twilight
as the light
of a full moon
fills the eastern sky

frost creeps across
the fallen cornstalks
in the abandoned garden

the ghostly hoot
of a horned owl
the only sound
in the deep
midnight darkness
