Waving through Tears

by Alison McKenzie

I watch quietly as you slip into
The waters of your own life,
Floating away of your own volition,
Stepping away from home
For the last time
To become a woman of your own.

Did you know that
You will take with you
A vital piece of my soul,
As your mother, your friend,
Your protector, your cheerleader?
You must take it,
As I must let it go,
And bid a farewell
That will change my very landscape.

I hear you in the next room,
Packing the boxes
Of your nooks and crannies,
Those garments that smell of you,
Those mementos that will remind you
Of your childhood here with me.

My angel unaware,
You have been the burning star
Scouring out the shadows
Of my mommy aches.
Your antics so often the champion navigator
Any time I felt my vessel run amuck.
When I doubted my purpose as a Mama,
You would dig out the vase
And fill it with wildflowers
Vibrant and bold.

Take all of our best times, my little butterfly,
And tuck them in your heart.
Step boldly as you face this world,
And your purpose in it.
And know that wherever you are,
My heart is there with you,
Supporting you in all you do,
And loving you through it all.

Author's Note: I'm driving Kate to Astoria on Tuesday, where she is beginning her life as an adult, away from home.

Awww Ali. How beautiful. Funny how our little girls being women make us see the little girl still very much alive in the mommy part of us.

My daughter is only 11...can't imagine how it will feel when she packs up for college. But you have expressed that feeling here so beautifully...thank you! This is going into my favorites...to read again as preparation... Namaste MFS

...now all the words simmer down into her new-life and they plant a good foundation of 'at least momma's got my back'! lovely speak of already missing you...

I let go of a son years ago and it was hard, now I have a niece living with me and I have started over with a fifteen year old and it is quiet different with a girl....this is so beautiful and my heart goes out to you and your girl, may your bond never break. smh

It is sooooo hard to say "Goodbye" to a child. Been there, done that- just remember; they will be back, the sadness will go aay and your child will learn to be n adult. I'm duRE you've done a good job with her. Loved the 2nd stanza; almost cried when I read it. They DO take pasrt of you with them. EXCELLENT!!!!
