Imagery

by Amanda Bullington

The nights are always the longest

Daylight brings the satisfactory noises
Of others bustling around
The scents of mankind stirring up the earth
Ants crawl in tiny circles
As dogs bark below and predators swoop overhead

The nights provide no such illusions
They are long, lonely, and cold
Making me strikingly aware of the
Emptiness of the room
The lack of breathing beside me
The gentle kisses lost to me for the summer

In the darkness I draw cool metal to my face
Press a button
Hearing the chirping of birds in my hands
In an imitation of true life

Face illuminated
By the soft electronic glow
I flip quickly through the images
Seeking the one that brings me comfort

When his face gazes back at me
My eyes fill with wonder
Never have I seen such adoration
Placed so charmingly on a man's face

Eyes of brown reassure me that
This life is only temporary
And I will one day be reunited
With the only face that has ever truly loved me

Courage returned to me
I shut the lens
Smiling as our memories together fill my mind
With visions that lull me to sleep
