I Wish Upon This Park Bench

by Jeffrey Parren

Sometimes
I wish upon
this park bench
I could meditate
instead of restlessly
sleeping
my lunch break away
and in so
finding the meaning
or answer
to my day's quandaries
instead
of trying to ignore
the second hand smoke
invading my lungs
puffed by that suit
seated ten feet away
or
that fat line cook sleeping
shoes off
stomach large and exposed
seated ten feet away
on the other side
or
the lady
with wrapped and aged legs
picking from the trash
with what little humility remains
after washing her hands
in a nearby waterfall
but
I realize
that ignoring these things
would surely make my day a bore;
without reason to keep on
the good fight.
