Take Me Out To The Ballgame

by Matthew Taylor

Yankee Stadium closed tonight,
A deep bittersweet time, memories of delight..
from 1955 until 1987
me and my dad went there,
then he went to Heaven.
I brought my kids there too,
always saw his face in the crowd..
he whispered that he was there, and alright...
I heard him despite the crowd.
We went there over 150 times together..
a tired guy from lugging mail in the sun...
always made time for his son,
and some fun.
I sat through the hours of filmed memories
choking back tears, that came and went..
until they showed the homerun by Bucky Dent!
It was 1978 all over, on the phone
in the late afternoon....
with my pop..
we both were screaming and yelling ...
over the top!
my wife was my girl then,
she took it all in stride...
she was a bit curious though,
when I cried.
Tears of joy that day,
and many times since then,
She was watching me tonight,
waiting for when...
I would break down, she..
really gets it! she understands
the Yankees and dad go hand in hand.
they won the last game,
I wept at the last out,
I pointed skyward...
unable to shout..
My heart said thank you dad,
my soul thanked God above...
for the memories, for saving dad,
and of course all the love.
for Mickey, and Bobby, for Yogi
for the success...
for uncle Phil the scooter-
and all of the rest,
for the day I met DiMaggio,
and ran all the way
to show dad his autograph,
and dad was asleep...
so tired from working all day...
but he woke up and smiled...
thanks dad...for loving your child.

Author's Note: very emotional, like seaside heights, a high school gym, or a live phone call during a game...all bring my dad right to the surface of my hearts excitement...I will never forget him or his love of the game...and me. thanks be to Jesus, I will see him again, say hi to the Mick for me dad, we have a lot of catching up to do.
