Starfish

by Melissa Panther

Silver starfish
Diamond in the center
It’s inconsequential
But it’s her
First

It came in a green box with
A ribbon she can’t retie

She extends the chain
With clear bands and
It wears her neck
Everyday since Easter
It shines and scrubs at
Her dullness
It is
Conflict free,
She never was

When the band
Breaks
You will scoop it up and
Figure she doesn’t even miss it,
And she will pretend the same.
