wake with a whisper

by Bet Yeldem

you step outside
and without even looking up
you feel the moon like a spotlight
shining brighter than you've seen
in years, you think,
and you wish i was there to see
but i can see it and you too
as you stand there under
the pale cascading light
drawn finally to lift your gaze
eyes lost in wonder
so much so that you can see
astronaut footprints
remnants of one world
greeting another
and fingerprints of god
where he handled it
like a bouncey ball
in the hands of a child
pressing craters with thumbs
as if it were made out of silly putty
like the two of us were
thoughts twist and dance
one after the other in your head
words you won't say yet
ideas that you dismiss
from our reality but entertain
nonetheless in certain instances
under a full moon trance
and you miss me
more than you thought you would
it scares you sometimes
but not now, instead
a half smile creeps across your face
because you like the feeling tonight
and i know it
so i will sing lullabies
to you as you sleep in the wee hours
of the morning
you'll wake with a whisper
of a melody that you'll struggle
to recall until dreaming
hours return again
