Diamondback

by Keith D Allison

The trail led North beyond the Lake on the Academy
the morning sun had brought a comfortable warmth to the noon day
a lovely day in late summer as the newly fallen snow listened from the peak
he had laid claim to a public trail
there is only 62 inches of him, but he was easily angered
I saw him to late
tried to give him a wide berth to the left
but he was enraged and within a split second
reach forth to put his venom into my leg
by some miracle he missed
rattlesnakes don't know why
but they do raise the hair on the back of my neck

Wow! Almost gives me the shivers reading about the rattlesnake. Effective use of anticipation and sudden crisis! Yeah, I keep my distance from rattlesnakes--not that I've seen that many in the wild.

just goes to show, the trails aren't meant for daydreaming! I know I've had one close encounter too many...62 inches...he had some good size, lucky break
