giving a dog a bone

by Nanette Bellman

he said,
"we should have sex when I'm drunk one time...
I'm a totally different person in bed."

a once in a lifetime opportunity.

and here I am,
contemplating turning it down,
throwing it away
when I should be rip-roaring-ready-to-go.

did I mention, I'm the queen
of pissing these moments down the drain.

because I know
that the words that will be said
will be words that we, well he, don't mean.

and no matter how tight he grasps my hair in his hands
(because I want him too...)
or how good what he says and does feels,
it's not going to make up for the fact
that in the morning
the only memories I'll have
are the broken promises,
the false prophecies,
and
he'll have no recollection
except for being naked.

I almost spit out my cookie when I read the "once in a lifetime opportunity" line. Ha! Great job all around!
