The lucidity of evidence

by Vikki Owens

Not that bad,
quite,
as the head-twitching,
jarred words
stumbled across thoughts
short circuit
patterns
of some,

no, i am very lucid

incredibly clear
when i am sure
of what you are thinking,
of what you are saying to me
when you say that you love me.

LIES!
all lies from a man who has
done nothing but take care of me
since the day that he met me
lies upon lies so that he can
get whatever he can get from me,
a grifter
a con-man
lies lies lies
from this man who's very heart is
so transparent
that strangers can see through it,
women walking down the street
see my name tattooed there,
satellites from space
catch glimpses of my
eyes, memories, winking
across the fabric
of his very being.

i am doubting him from
the bleached pages
of my paperthin soul.
i am suspecting him
as he moves his lips across mine
so lightly
it could have been a whisper,
it could have been his very
ghost
he'd just passed to me across
the space between our mouths.

i am so aware of his
intrinsic
corruption,
he is, as THEY all are,
i know this.

i know this as i stare at the
ring around my finger,
as i touch the scars that i've caused,
visible evidence of the times
his heart has
broken
down the faultline that is me,
as i look into eyes
that have never told me a single lie.

lucid.

Lucid indeed. Quite beautiful, too.
