Gruonbach

by Leonard M Hawkes

I did not climb alone,
Though at break of day
No local soul was on the
Upward path above the lake;

And though I arrived only
Late the night before,
I knew them--
The spruces, the firs, the beeches,
Willows, berry bushes, shy bloomers;
And crumbling glittering metamorphics--

Whether by learning,
Down-Rhine-experience,
Or by the gift of intuition,
They spoke--

My heart answered--
And we spent the
Grey-blue early hour
Together with the Mountain.
