Friday

by Richard Vince

I want to read, but that would be
A terrible waste of such a
Beautiful evening.

As accustomed as I am to
Going my own way, I think
Everyone on this train is going
To the same place as me:
The weekend.

I see beauty not only in the
Gently fading evening sky, but
In the tired optimism of
The people around me, as they
Anticipate three days of peace,
Smiles and however those things arrive.

So as much as I smile at the sky,
I smile at the people around me
And enjoy the feeling of
Their optimism warming the air.
I wish them joy in at least
Equal measure to that which
They have given me.
