Maria is too much
for me
sometimes.

She is my stepmom:
angry and drunk and
messy.
She is mascara stains
and twenty-four hour take-backs.
I am no saint,
not even good enough a friend
to look her in the eye
as she yells about how
she needs to get
laid.

Carlos tells her she needs
something
and it's definitely not
a good fuck.
I sink into the couch,
pretend to be asleep.
