Speaking of Intensity

by Alison McKenzie

I can be overwhelming.
I’ve seen that girl staring at me
From the mirror far too many times
To tell myself she isn’t there.

The intensity presses, too often
Pushes away the subject of my longing.
My honesty stuns,
But not like a sparkly strapless gown,
Or a beautiful face.
It’s just plain jaw-dropping disbelief
Until I turn away, ashamed to be frank.

Over the years, I’ve learned to temper blunt
With the smooth brilliance of sunshine
And genuine appreciation without aversion -
There is value in every living thing.

So forgive me if I seem crass.
It’s just a piece of who I am
That insists, now and again,
On taking her place at the front of the line.

Again, nice write Alison. It has taken me quite a long time to realize that one must understand where the other is coming from and that is important. That said, there are times when things must be said in a straight forward manner.

Oh so true. If only self-assurance could be taken as face value and not diminished into pomposity. Nice job!

I don't recognize that "lady" in the mirror either! Time to have that genuine appreciation....especially as we get older... MFS

...ali, this is so rich w/ hidden facades in a hall of mirrors, you keep the reader on her toes and hold tight the tether...i would focus and then squint because i had blinked and you'd moved on...you are a great poet.
